Executive Doctorate of Business Administration

An MBA is no longer enough.  For those with serious aspirations to become a decision maker, executive or thought leader, it is essential to demonstrate a different range of attributes: a commitment to lifelong learning, a commitment to deep reflection on practice and experience and the ability to apply sophisticated thinking to high level and apparently insoluble problems.  These are the skills only a DBA or E-DBA can impart.

Our accelerated executive DBA programme is for those who wish to bring their expertise to bear on significant challenges, to develop sophisticated solutions that challenge possibility and which are informed by a deep understanding not just of a problem or the sector where it arises but of the academic and philosophical underpinnings of the entire system where is occurs.

DBA and E-DBA candidates are ambitious problem solvers seeking to lever their experience and knowledge to push back the boundaries of knowledge and exit the programme with the ability to think in far wider strategic context, and the ability to port that learning to other businesses, to a higher level in their career and across sectors and international borders.

Our Executive DBA programme or E-DBA is for those with extensive experience and the desire to advance their career to the greatest extent.

Our E-DBA programme is in three stages:

  • Stage I is the prior completion of master degree in any relevant discipline, with the credits from that degree recognised in satisfaction of the E-DBA or in specific circumstances experience equivalent to it.
  • Stage II is the completion of the thesis preparation stage.
  • Stage III is the completion of your doctoral thesis/project of 40-60,000 words.  The format of the project is decided by you and your supervisor, recognising a single thesis is not always the most appropriate form.

Programme duration:

We understand studying when you are building a career is demanding.  We allow you to complete the programme flexibly in 12-72 months – the fee is the same.

Entry requirements:

Candidates must have a second-class honours degree in any subject and 3 years relevant work experience at an appropriate level as well as a masters degree in a relevant subject earned in the last ten years from a recognised HEI and a sufficient level of English language ability to competently complete the programme.

Students with exceptional circumstances may be considered for entry at the discretion of the Provost.

Waiver of credits

Candidates with exceptional academic or professional achievements or prior research experience (at the equivalent of UK Level 8) may be permitted to request recognition of those achievements for a waiver of some or all credits at Phase 1 and 2.  The decision to waive credits will rest with the Provost.

You can choose two routes to your E-DBA: via the Accreditation of Prior Certificated Learning (APCL) or via the Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning (APEL).

There is no credit waiver for Phase 3, which must be completed in its entirety.

The programme fee shall be the same irrespective of the level of entry.

Admissions

Prospective candidates must apply directly or via an agent, completing the relevant application form and providing an outline of no less than 500 words of their intended thesis. Applications will be subject to an initial filtering to establish credibility. Applications deemed credible by the admissions committee will receive an offer to enrol at the next enrolment date. Candidates may be required to take part in an interview where their proposal will be further scrutinised to assure its credibility.
